Blue Lace Agate is a banded variety of Chalcedony, which is microcrystalline Quartz. The blue is faint and comes from trace amounts of minerals within the Silica, though the exact cause is still debated.

It forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where Silica-rich water seeped in and left thin layers on the walls, one after another. Each band is a separate pause in that process, and small shifts in the chemistry of the water change the colour and width from one layer to the next. The bands in Blue Lace Agate are unusually fine and tightly packed, and often curve and fold in tight patterns rather than running in clean rings.

Blue Lace Agate sits at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
