- This is an exceptional crystal demonstrating the natural formation of Agate with Amethyst over considerable time.
Grey-blue Agate banding runs the full perimeter of this large oval slice in compressed layers, each one an episode of Silica deposition within the original host cavity. The bands narrow as they move inward, the grey tones softening through blue and then white before giving way to the Amethyst interior.
The white Chalcedony band that divides Agate from Amethyst is the sharpest line in the piece. It marks the point at which conditions within the cavity shifted from banded Silica deposition to open crystal growth. Agate formed first, layer by layer. As the cavity contracted, Amethyst grew inward from the remaining walls, the trace Iron and natural irradiation responsible for the violet colour.
