- Chevron Amethyst from Tamil Nadu displays striking zigzag bands of purple and white that formed over millions of years in southern India's ancient rock formations. The distinctive V-shaped patterns develop when mineral-rich water repeatedly flows through cracks in granite, depositing layers of quartz with varying amounts of iron that create the alternating colours.
These crystals come from weathered granite outcrops across Tamil Nadu, where natural erosion has exposed the banded formations. The chevron patterns can be fine and delicate or bold and dramatic, depending on how the original deposits formed. Some pieces show regular, evenly-spaced bands while others display more irregular zigzag formations.
The purple bands contain trace amounts of iron that give amethyst its colour, while the white or grey sections are nearly pure quartz. This creates sharp colour contrasts that make each specimen visually distinctive. The banding typically continues through the entire crystal, creating consistent patterns on all surfaces.
