- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- Uruguayan Amethyst formed within the Paraná Basin's flood basalt sequences approximately 130 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. As these extensive lava flows cooled, thermal contraction created spherical to ellipsoidal cavities in the basalt matrix. These geodes provided enclosed environments where silica-rich hydrothermal fluids could deposit quartz crystals over extended periods.
The characteristic purple coloration results from iron and aluminum impurities within the crystal lattice, with color intensity varying based on natural radiation exposure and trace element concentrations. Uruguay's specimens typically exhibit well-formed hexagonal prismatic crystals with consistent color distribution, a result of the region's relatively stable geological conditions during formation.
The Artigas region, where most commercial extraction occurs, represents part of the larger Serra Geral Formation. Here, the combination of specific volcanic chemistry, groundwater composition, and prolonged formation periods produced amethyst with notably high clarity and color saturation compared to deposits from other global localities.
