This chromatic superiority results from the unique geochemistry of Uruguay's Artigas department deposits, where higher concentrations of Iron impurities and optimal conditions of natural gamma radiation within the host Basalts produce Amethyst of unrivalled intensity. The crystals displayed here exemplify the legendary "grape jelly" colouration where the purple becomes almost opaque, yet still revealing violet flashes at the termination edges.
The specimen's sculptural form distinguishes it from typical Amethyst clusters. Rather than a flat geode section with crystals projecting in one direction, this piece presents fully developed crystal terminations across its entire surface — a formation suggesting growth within a cavity where conditions permitted unrestricted crystallisation in three dimensions.
