- Amethyst is the violet variety of Quartz, Silicon Sioxide (SiO₂). It crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 on the Mohs scale. The colour comes from trace Iron within the crystal lattice, activated by natural radiation over geological time.
A phantom forms when a Quartz crystal pauses in growth and then resumes. The outline of the earlier crystal face is preserved inside the later growth, held as a ghost of the crystal as it once was. Each boundary marks a change in the mineral-bearing fluid, a shift in temperature or a gap in supply.
