- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- This Phantom Amethyst formed within gas cavities of basaltic lava flows in Brazil's volcanic regions. During crystallisation, silica-rich hydrothermal solutions deposited quartz in multiple growth phases over extended periods, creating the distinctive "phantom" inclusions visible within the crystal structure.
The phantoms represent interruptions in the crystallisation process, when mineral-rich solutions containing iron oxides, manganese, or chlorite temporarily coated the growing crystal faces before clear quartz growth resumed. This created internal boundaries that preserve the outline of earlier crystal formations.
The purple coloration results from trace iron impurities within the quartz lattice that have been altered by natural background radiation over geological time.
Each specimen represents multiple episodes of crystal growth, typically spanning thousands to millions of years, making visible the temporal layers of the crystallisation process that are normally hidden within uniform crystals.
