- Amethyst is the violet variety of Quartz, Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂). It crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 on the Mohs scale. The colour comes from trace iron in the crystal lattice, activated by natural radiation over geological time. In most Amethyst that colour spreads in broad, even zones. In Trapiche Amethyst it is concentrated into a pattern.
The name comes from the Spanish ‘Trapiche’, a sugar-cane mill with a spoked wheel, and was first applied to Emerald in Colombia. In Quartz, it describes a crystal whose growth has organised into radiating sectors.
