- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- This amethyst formed about 1.1 billion years ago in ancient lava flows around Thunder Bay. When the lava was still hot, gas bubbles created hollow spaces in the rock. Over millions of years, mineral-rich water slowly filled these cavities, depositing layers of quartz crystals.
The purple colour comes from tiny amounts of iron trapped in the crystal structure during formation. The reddish hematite inclusions formed when iron-rich solutions moved through the growing crystals, creating internal patterns and phantom-like zones. The well-formed crystal faces show that these amethysts grew slowly and undisturbed over long periods.
Thunder Bay amethyst is world-renowned for this particular combination of rich purple color, excellent clarity, and the characteristic hematite inclusions that give many specimens their unique internal landscapes.
