- Quartz is Silicon Dioxide, SiO₂. It crystallises in the trigonal system, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of roughly 2.65. In this piece the Quartz appears in three forms, nested in sequence, and the slice cuts through all of them.
The rim is a broad zone of white Quartz whose fibres radiate inward in fine, feathered sprays. This is the main body of the slice, and it records a long period of slow growth from Silica-bearing water. At the centre the cavity remains open, and its walls are lined with small Amethyst crystals. Amethyst is the violet variety of Quartz. Trace Iron in the crystal lattice, activated by natural radiation, gives the colour, which here runs from pale lilac to a deeper violet, with some paler pink-toned crystals among them.
The sequence is the history of the geode. A gas cavity formed in cooling volcanic rock. Silica-rich fluid entered it, depositing the the fibrous white Quartz first, followed by the Amethyst, as conditions changed and the cavity narrowed. The slice has been cut and polished so that each stage can be read from the outside in.
