Operating as a commercial Zinc mine since 1969, Elmwood's hydrothermal ore bodies formed within Ordovician-age Limestone approximately 450 million years ago. The unique geochemistry of these deposits yielded calcite specimens of unparalleled size and aesthetic quality during the mine's peak production years.
The Calcites displayed here exhibit the classic elongated Scalenohedral habit that distinguishes Elmwood's finest production, dramatically pointed crystals with steep pyramidal faces, their warm golden-amber coloration intensifying toward the terminations.
