- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- Cavansite is a Hydrated Calcium Vanadium Silicate. The name is a contraction of its elements: Calcium, Vanadium and Silicon. Vanadium is the source of the colour, a deep, saturated blue that few other minerals can match. It crystallises in the Orthorhombic system, typically as tiny bladed crystals grouped into radiating spheres and rosettes, and measures just 3–4 on the Mohs scale. It was first described in 1967, and for decades it was known from only a few localities worldwide.
The Deccan Traps changed that. These vast basalt flows in western India are riddled with gas cavities that later filled with Zeolites and related minerals, and the quarries near Pune have produced Cavansite of a quality not seen elsewhere. It grows in these vesicles from low-temperature, mineral-rich fluids that carried Vanadium out of the surrounding basalt.
