- Chrome diopside is the Chromium-bearing variety of Diopside, a Calcium-Magnesium Pyroxene (CaMgSi₂O₆). Trace Chromium substituting in the crystal lattice produces a saturated, deep green and it is the Chromium that separates this variety from ordinary Diopside, which is typically pale or colourless.
Siberia is the principal source of gem-quality material, with the Inagli massif in the Sakha Republic the best known locality. The mineral forms in ultramafic rock, a Chromium-rich environment of the kind found at depth and the same chemistry that makes it green is why it occurs there and in few other settings.
Diopside crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale, with a refractive index of roughly 1.67–1.70.
