A fascinating Faden Quartz cluster from Santander Province, Colombia, composed of intergrown translucent Quartz crystals displaying warm golden hues and subtle smoky-blue tones. The specimen exhibits the distinctive flattened crystal habit typical of Faden Quartz, with parallel crystal growth creating an elegant, layered architecture and exceptional visual complexity.
Faden Quartz forms when fractures within host rocks repeatedly open and heal during crystal growth. A fine white "thread" or Faden develops along the original fracture plane, acting as a seed from which Quartz crystals grow outward on both sides. In this specimen, the crystals display characteristic horizontal growth lines and flattened forms, while Iron staining and trace mineral inclusions contribute delicate golden colouration and smoky internal zoning.
The Quartz crystallised from Silica-rich hydrothermal fluids circulating through tectonically active fractures. As the fractures periodically reopened, crystal growth resumed along the same structural plane, preserving a visible record of deformation and mineralisation within the crystal itself. Colombian Faden Quartz is particularly prized for its clarity, unusual growth habits, and the geological story preserved within each crystal, making specimens such as this exceptional examples of the interplay between crystal growth and tectonic processes.
