- Calcium Fluoride, nothing more in terms of chemistry and yet Fluorite produces colour across a wider range than almost any other mineral. The blue and violet tones characteristic of Afghan material occupy the same crystal simultaneously, the shift between them recording a change in trace element concentration or irradiation conditions during growth.
Fluorite has perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions, which gives polished faces their particular optical quality.
Afghan deposits, concentrated in the northeastern provinces, produce Fluorite with strong colour saturation and complex internal character. The dark inclusions visible through the transparency of fine specimens are enclosed minerals from the host rock environment, present during crystal growth and sealed permanently within the Fluorite as it formed around them.
