An exceptional example of the rare fibrous variety of Hematite historically known as "needle ore", sourced from the famous iron ore deposits of the Furness Peninsula in Cumbria. This elegant specimen consists of densely packed metallic Hematite crystals arranged in a long, naturally curved blade-like aggregate, displaying the distinctive parallel growth habit that made Furness Hematite renowned among both miners and mineral collectors.
Unlike the massive or botryoidal forms commonly associated with Hematite, needle ore develops as elongated fibrous crystals that grow together in tightly packed bundles. The specimen's remarkable curvature reflects growth within a confined cavity where crystal development responded to changing space conditions during formation.
The metallic steel-grey to black colour is characteristic of Hematite, an Iron oxide mineral that serves as one of the world's most important sources of Iron. Fine growth striations visible along the specimen's length record incremental crystal growth during mineralisation, while subtle reddish highlights visible at certain angles reflect Hematite's diagnostic red streak.
The Furness Iron ore field was one of Britain's most important Iron-producing regions during the nineteenth century. The deposits formed through the replacement of Carboniferous limestones by Iron-rich hydrothermal fluids, creating exceptionally pure Hematite bodies that became famous worldwide. Needle ore specimens from this locality are particularly prized because such delicate crystal habits are uncommon and represent specialised growth conditions within the ore system.
Hematite is considered the most effective of all stones for grounding oneself within the body and the physical world, helping one to connect to the soul of the Earth. The stone is thought to provide inner strength and courage when facing hardships, enabling one to see the silver lining on every dark cloud and the light at the end of the tunnel, helping one to move through challenging times.
Hematite’s properties centre on stability and practical wisdom, helping one remain centered while working toward goals. It is said to offer protection from negative energies while enhancing focus and determination in both spiritual and material pursuits.
When working on oneself the first place to start is to master being and remaining grounded in all situations, remaining grounded brings one strength and balance, and anyone can be successful with balance. Just remember to stand strong in your truth.
