- SUNSTONE
Sunstone is a member of the Feldspar group, recognised for the warm flashes of light that can appear across its surface. This optical effect, known as aventurescence, is created by tiny flat inclusions within the stone that reflect light as it moves.
These inclusions vary according to the source of the material. In some Sunstones they are Hematite or Goethite, while Oregon Sunstone is particularly known for inclusions of native Copper. The size and concentration of these platelets determine whether the effect appears as a soft golden sheen or as more pronounced metallic flashes.
Sunstone can occur in both Orthoclase and Plagioclase Feldspar, so the name describes its appearance rather than one single mineral composition. Its colour commonly ranges through golden yellow, peach, orange and reddish brown, although some deposits produce red, green and even blue-green material.
When polished, the combination of Feldspar’s natural translucency and the reflective mineral platelets gives Sunstone its characteristic depth and movement, with the internal flashes changing as the piece is turned in the light.
IOLITE
Iolite from India is the gem variety of Cordierite, a magnesium aluminium silicate formed within high-grade metamorphic rocks under considerable heat and pressure. Important Indian deposits occur in areas including Karnataka, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, where Cordierite is found within ancient schists and gneisses.
Its most distinctive characteristic is its strong pleochroism. As the crystal is viewed from different directions, its colour can shift noticeably between violet-blue, blue-grey and much paler yellowish or almost colourless tones. This effect is inherent to the crystal structure and is one of the defining features of Iolite.
The blue to violet colour is principally associated with iron within the mineral, and finer material can show considerable depth and transparency. Unlike many blue gemstones, Iolite is not routinely treated to improve its colour, so the tones seen in the stone are generally those produced naturally during its formation.
Indian Iolite can also contain visible Hematite inclusions, sometimes appearing as fine reddish or copper-coloured platelets within the blue stone. The combination of natural colour, strong pleochroism and the internal features created during its metamorphic formation gives each piece a distinctly changing character as it is viewed from different angles.
