- Larimar is the blue variety of Pectolite, a Sodium-Calcium Silicate Hydroxide. Pectolite occurs in several countries, but it is almost always white or colourless. Copper substituting for Calcium in the crystal structure gives the colour, which runs from pale sky blue to a saturated sea-water turquoise.
The stone formed in cavities in volcanic rock, where hot, mineral-rich fluids deposited fibrous Pectolite.
Larimar crystallises in the triclinic system and measures 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale.
