This authentic Sikhote-Alin Meteorite shrapnel fragment originates from the historic meteorite fall of February 12, 1947, when a massive Iron Meteorite entered Earth’s atmosphere over eastern Russia and fragmented during descent. The event produced one of the largest documented Meteorite showers in recorded history.
Unlike regmaglypted individuals shaped primarily during atmospheric flight, shrapnel fragments were violently torn apart upon explosive impact, resulting in sharply sculptural surfaces, angular cavities, and dynamic metallic deformation. The specimen exhibits the characteristic oxidised Iron-Nickel composition and textured morphology associated with high-energy fragmentation.
Composed principally of Iron and Nickel alloys, Sikhote-Alin meteorites belong to the coarse octahedrite class and remain among the most historically significant and widely studied Iron meteorites ever recovered.
