- Natrolite is a Sodium Aluminium Silicate Hydrate and a member of the Zeolite group. The name comes from the Greek words Natron, Soda and Lithos, in reference to its Sodium content. It crystallises in the orthorhombic system, most often as slender, needle-like crystals that radiate outward in sprays and sheaves. The crystals are typically colourless to white, with a vitreous to silky lustre and a hardness of 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale.
The Lovozero massif in the Murmansk Oblast is one of the largest layered Alkaline intrusions in the world, formed in the Late Devonian roughly 370 million years ago. Its Peralkaline rocks are exceptionally rich in Sodium and in rare elements, the massif is among the most productive mineral localities known. Natrolite forms late in this system, crystallising in pegmatites and hydrothermal cavities from Sodium-rich fluids as the intrusion cooled.
