- Gold Sheen Obsidian forms through a specific sequence of volcanic processes that create its distinctive aesthetic properties.
This volcanic glass originates when high-silica magma erupts explosively from volcanic vents and cools rapidly upon contact with air or water, preventing the formation of crystalline structures.
The golden sheen develops during the cooling process through the incorporation of microscopic inclusions. As the molten lava rapidly solidifies, tiny gas bubbles become trapped within the glass matrix, along with minute crystals of magnetite or hematite that precipitate from the cooling magma. These inclusions arrange themselves in parallel orientations due to the flow patterns of the viscous lava before solidification.
The optical phenomenon responsible for the golden appearance occurs when light encounters these aligned microscopic structures. The parallel arrangement of inclusions creates interference between light waves, selectively reflecting certain wavelengths while allowing others to pass through. This process, known as thin-film interference, produces the characteristic metallic luster that shifts and changes as the viewing angle changes.
