- Obsidian is volcanic glass, it is not a crystal and it has no ordered internal structure. It forms when Silica-rich Lava, roughly 70% Silicon Dioxide or more, cools too quickly for crystals to grow, so the atoms freeze in place as an amorphous solid. Hardness is 5-5.5 on the Mohs scale and the fracture is conchoidal, breaking in smooth, curved shells with very sharp edges.
Silver Sheen Obsidian is black glass with a metallic lustre beneath the surface. The effect comes from the flow of the Lava. As it moved and cooled, microscopic gas bubbles and, in some material, minute crystallites were drawn out and aligned in thin layers. Light striking those layers is reflected as a silver to pale-grey flash, which appears and fades as the stone is turned.
Mexico lies on one of the world’s most active volcanic belts and its Obsidian has been worked for thousands of years. Mesoamerican cultures including the Teotihuacan and the Aztec cut it into blades, mirrors and ceremonial objects and it was among the most valuable materials of the region. Modern material is recovered from volcanic terrain in central and western Mexico.
