- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- These pyrite specimens (FeS₂) from Navajún, Spain, display exceptional cubic crystal forms with near-perfect faces and sharp edge definition. The crystals formed within Cretaceous sedimentary rocks through hydrothermal processes under reducing conditions.
Navajún pyrite is distinguished by its remarkable crystal quality—the cubes achieve precise geometric forms with minimal surface defects and excellent face development. The metallic luster and brass-yellow color are characteristic of the mineral's iron disulfide composition.
The locality in La Rioja province has become the world's premier source for high-grade cubic pyrite specimens. The stable geological environment during formation promoted slow crystal growth, resulting in the exceptional morphology and surface quality that distinguishes Navajún material from pyrite found elsewhere.
These specimens demonstrate textbook cubic symmetry within the isometric crystal system, with specific gravity of 5.0-5.2 g/cm³ and Mohs hardness of 6-6.5. The crystals range from simple individual cubes to complex intergrown clusters, representing excellent examples of natural geometric precision.
