- Quartz is Silicon Dioxide, SiO₂. It crystallises in the trigonal system, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of roughly 2.65.
Chlorite is not a single mineral but a group of sheet Silicates, typically Iron-Magnesium Aluminium Silicates with Hydroxyl, that crystallise as fine green flakes and scales. When a Quartz crystal grows in a Chlorite-bearing fluid, microscopic Chlorite particles settle on the crystal faces and are overgrown as growth resumes. Each layer marks a pause. The result is a ghost of the earlier crystal, outlined in green within the later one and in some pieces there are several, nested like the shells of a pyramid. The green is the colour of the Chlorite and not of the Quartz, which remains colourless. Where the inclusions are dense, they give the stone a soft, mossy, landscape-like depth.
Brazil is among the world’s great sources of Quartz, and its granitic pegmatites and hydrothermal veins produce crystals of exceptional size and clarity. Phantom Quartz of this kind forms in that setting, where the fluids change as the crystal grows.
