This beautiful slice evidences the aesthetic of the historical formation of the piece. Agate forms first, the silica-rich groundwater depositing in successive layers within a host rock cavity, each band recording an episode of mineralisation. The colour gradation reflects subtle variations in Iron content and oxidation conditions across those episodes.
As Silica concentration increased and space allowed, Quartz crystals then grew outward from the Agate's outer margin, the Iron impurities that colour them responsible for their characteristic golden-yellow tone. The outer perimeter terminates in a crown of larger, more fully formed crystal points where growth continued unconstrained to the cavity wall.
The slice has been cut perpendicular to the growth axis and polished on both faces, rendering the entire stratigraphic sequence visible. Every band and every crystal is exactly where the chemistry placed it.
Brazil's volcanic Basalt formations have produced Agate and Quartz nodules of this quality for over a century. Few cross-sections capture the full formation sequence, from first silica layer to final crystal terminus, with this degree of completeness and symmetry
