- Quartz is silicon dioxide, SiO₂. It crystallises in the trigonal system, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, a specific gravity of roughly 2.65 and a vitreous lustre. Smoky quartz is its grey to brown variety, and the colour runs from pale smoke through deep chocolate to near-black.
The colour comes from trace Aluminium substituting for Silicon in the crystal lattice. Natural radiation from the surrounding rock, over geological time, strips electrons from those sites and creates colour centres that absorb light. The longer and stronger the exposure, the darker the crystal. Because the colour is a product of radiation, it is also sensitive to heat.
Smoky Quartz grows in granitic pegmatites, in alpine-type veins and in hydrothermal cavities, wherever Silica-rich fluids deposit crystals in rock that carries trace Aluminium and a natural source of radiation. Large, transparent crystals are classic products of the Swiss Alps, Brazil and Madagascar.
