- Quartz is Silicon Dioxide, SiO₂. It crystallises in the trigonal system, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, a specific gravity of roughly 2.65 and a vitreous lustre.
The inclusions are Black Tourmaline, almost always Schorl, the Iron-rich member of the group. Tourmaline is a complex Boron Silicate and Schorl crystallises in the trigonal system as slender, striated needles and prisms, with a hardness of 7-7.5. In Tourmalinated Quartz the needles run through the crystal as straight black lines, crossed bundles, radiating sprays and loose drifts, suspended in clear quartz as though drawn in ink. Quartz and Tourmaline grow in the same environment, and Tourmaline crystallised first or alongside the Quartz, so the needles were enclosed as the Quartz grew around them.
Boron is the limiting element. It concentrates in the last fluids of cooling granitic magma, which is why Schorl is a typical mineral of granitic pegmatites. Brazil, Minas Gerais in particular, is among the world’s great pegmatite provinces, and it supplies much of the Tourmalinated Quartz on the market.
