- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- Rhodonite is a Manganese Milicate and takes its name from the Greek word Rhodon, meaning Rose. The colour comes from Manganese, which gives pink to deep rose-red. In the finest material the surface is crossed by black veining. This is Oxidised Manganese, which develops as the rock weathers and gives each piece its own pattern.
The Urals are the historic source. Deposits near Yekaterinburg, including the Sedelnikovo area, have been worked since the late 18th century. The rock formed where Manganese-rich sediments were altered by metamorphism.
Rhodonite also occurs in Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Peru and the United States. It crystallises in the triclinic system, measures 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, and has a specific gravity of roughly 3.4–3.7.
