- Seraphinite is a trade name for a variety of Clinochlore, a Magnesium-Iron Aluminium Silicate in the Chlorite group. It crystallises in the Monoclinic system as fine, platy and fibrous aggregates, and the stone is defined by its pattern. The name refers to the Seraphim, the six-winged angels, for the resemblance to plumage.
This material comes from the Korshunovskoye deposit near Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky in the Irkutsk Oblast. It is an Iron Skarn deposit, formed where igneous intrusion altered the surrounding Carbonate rock. Skarns of this kind produce unusual mineral assemblages in a narrow contact zone, and here the Clinochlore grew in the form that gives Seraphinite its feathered structure. It is recovered as a by-product of Iron mining, and the deposit is the principal source known to the trade.
Hardness is 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes Seraphinite a soft stone.
