- Two minerals share this piece, and they are very different in character. The grey-green mass is Seraphinite, a trade name for a variety of Clinochlore, a Magnesium-Iron Aluminium Silicate in the Chlorite group, (Mg,Fe)₅Al(Si₃Al)O₁₀(OH)₈. The honey-gold crystals are Calcite, Calcium Carbonate, CaCO₃. One is a Silicate that grows as fine feathers, the other a Carbonate that grows as sharp, glassy crystals, and each shows its own habit clearly.
The front has been cut and polished. Silvery-white fibres of Clinochlore fan outward in broad, overlapping sprays, each one rising from a point at the base and opening towards the edge, so the face reads as a cluster of feathers or the ribs of shells. Where they meet, the fans form scalloped boundaries, and the outline of the top follows that curve. Down the centre runs a dark seam of tiny, glittering crystals, deep green to near-black, from which the fans seem to grow. Along the upper edge and one side, a fringe of Calcite shows through, in pale gold.
The reverse has been left natural. A dark, Iron-stained, brown-maroon matrix carries clusters of honey to amber Calcite crystals, densest in a cap at the top and scattered in patches below, with a few deeper red-brown crystals among them. Calcite crystallises in the trigonal system, with a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, and the colour here is typical of trace Iron. The matrix and Calcite together show the rock the Seraphinite grew in, a view the polished face alone does not give.
The material comes from the Korshunovskoye deposit near Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky in the Irkutsk Oblast, an iron skarn. Skarns form where igneous intrusion alters the surrounding Carbonate rock, producing unusual mineral assemblages in a narrow contact zone, and Calcite is a natural companion in that setting. Seraphinite is recovered alongside the Iron ore and is the principal source known to the trade.
