- GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
- Shattuckite is a Copper Silicate Hydroxide. It was first described in 1915 from the Shattuck Mine at Bisbee, Arizona and takes its name from there. It crystallises in the Orthorhombic system, usually as fine fibres arranged in radiating or spherical aggregates. Hardness is 3.5 on the Mohs scale, with a specific gravity of roughly 4.1.
It is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidised zone of Copper deposits where circulating groundwater reacts with primary Copper ores. Namibia is its most significant source. The country’s Copper districts, including the Kaokoveld in the north-west and the legendary Tsumeb deposit, are known for rich secondary Copper mineralisation.
