- Lepidolite is a Lithium-bearing Mica, a Potassium Lithium Aluminium Silicate with Fluorine, approximately KLi₂Al(Al,Si)₃O₁₀(F,OH)₂. The name comes from the Greek lepis, scale, for the fine flakes of which it is made. It crystallises in the monoclinic system as tightly packed plates, and the best material is a dense mass of tiny, glittering scales in lilac, pink and purple. Manganese in the structure produces the colour. Hardness is 2.5–3.5 on the Mohs scale, with a specific gravity of roughly 2.8–3.3 and a pearly lustre. Like all Micas it has perfect cleavage in one direction, which is why it flakes.
Lepidolite forms in granitic pegmatites, the coarse-grained rock that crystallises last from a cooling magma. Lithium, Fluorine and other rare elements concentrate in the final fluids, and Lepidolite crystallises from them. It is found alongside Tourmaline (including Pink Rubellite), Quartz, Spodumene and Albite. It is one of the Lithium-rich minerals mined as ore.
Please note that Lepidolite is a soft stone. - CRYSTAL/MINERAL
