- Vesuvianite is a complex Calcium-Magnesium-Aluminium Sorosilicate. It was first described from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, which gave the species its name. The alternative name, Idocrase, comes from the Greek for “form” and “mixture”, a reference to crystals that resemble several other minerals. It crystallises in the Tetragonal system, typically as prismatic crystals or compact, massive material, with a hardness of 6–7 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of roughly 3.3–3.5.
