CALCITE (STELLAR BEAM)

Stellar Beam Calcite is a rare form of Calcite, and it looks nothing like the ordinary kind. It grows as long, slender blades, clear to pale grey, white or faintly golden, with sharp, glassy faces. They form in radiating sprays or loose, crossing groups, so the crystals seem to fan out from a centre like beams of light.
Calcite is Calcium Carbonate and one of the most common minerals on earth, but these crystals took an unusual shape. They grew in open cavities in Limestone, where Calcium-rich water slowly deposited Calcite as it cooled. The Elmwood Mine is part of the Central Tennessee Zinc and Lead district, and the Calcite formed from the same low-temperature fluids that laid down the ores. A small shift in the chemistry of the water can change the shape of a crystal, and here it favoured long, thin blades over the stubby rhombs calcite usually makes. Fluorite, Sphalerite and Barite turn up in the same workings.
Elmwood is a working Zinc mine, and the Calcite is a by-product of mining rather than the target.
